Working in tandem with community, attorney Prerna Lal successfully obtained the release of UC Berkeley student Luis Mora from Otay Mesa Detention Facility, in a case that became high-profile very quickly. Hundreds of people wrote letters in support of Luis Mora, including Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Kamala Harris (who also spoke about him during a subcommittee hearing, and Representative Barbara Lee).
After obtaining his release on the minimum possible bond, we were also able to terminate his removal proceedings and file for adjustment of status on his behalf under the Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) program.
With our help, Luis was able to receive work authorization, and eventually, he also won adjustment of status.
